KEYNOTE: Amy Cueva: Design For Change: Empathy and Purpose
The healthcare industry is in the midst of a great deal of disruption and change. We are trying to heal the pain, incrementally improve the situation, and explore how the latest innovations in technology can help people care for themselves and improve the care they receive. We know that technology isn't always the answer - sometimes it either doesn't solve the issue or introduces more issues than it solves . How can we work together to deliver meaningful change? Human-centered design can provide us with the method. It starts with a deep understanding of and empathy for the people we serve as it provides the necessary information and inspiration to direct our efforts in the right places. We can leverage motivational psychology to design systems that engage and empower as opposed to control. We can work within our organization to make the changes that need to be made in order to bring a fundamentally improved experience of health to the marketplace, by fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration.

KEYNOTE: Adam Connor: Design For Change: Building Creative, Collaborative Cultures
Organizations are taking a strong interest in design — realizing that understanding the needs, expectations and contexts in which people interact and use products and services leads not only to improvements in their current offerings, but ideas and opportunities for new innovations. With this realization has come immense investment in design talent and training. But having design talent and creativity does not ensure success. Design is not just a new tool to add to a growing collection. As these skills and individuals are added to the mix in many teams, both designers and non-designers alike often struggle to work together and produce great work.

Design is a shift in mindset that influences how we behave and make decisions. In order for organizations to make use of design they must be set up to do so. In this presentation we'll look at the characteristics and cultures of organizations that are able to effectively create, collaborate on, and produce great design and explore strategies to foster innovation by building better teams, training and inspiring people, helping them use new tools to work together, identify problems and break down silos that stop progress.

KEYNOTE: Susannah Fox: Chief Technology Officer, U.S. Department of Health Human Services
Invent Health: Building an Innovation Nation

We are at critical inflection point in our history where we are in a better position than ever before to leverage the American spirit of invention to create ways for people to live more independently, in better health, and with greater dignity.

The HHS IDEA Lab has led the Department’s work in expanding public access, championing open innovation, and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to contribute. The Invent Health initiative marks out a new frontier: innovation in the design and manufacture of hardware, such as medical and assistive devices. We are asking questions of our colleagues inside and outside government, aiming to clarify barriers and lay out guideposts as we explore how the Maker movement is helping us build toward an Innovation Nation.

For example: How might we empower small-scale designers, builders, and developers to find creative solutions to challenges we see across the landscape of health and human services? What will happen when everyone has access to the tools and information they need to solve their own problems — and share their ideas with others?

KEYNOTE: Dr. David Ludwig: Professor of Pediatrics, Boston Children's Hospital
The conventional approach to weight loss, based on the calorie balance model, offers the simple advice, “eat less and move more.”  Unfortunately, few people can maintain weight loss over the long term through calorie restriction because the body fights back, with rising hunger and slowing metabolism. An alternative approach to treatment aims to target the underlying driver of weight gain – fat cells overstimulated to hoard too many calories – leading to weight loss with less struggle.

KEYNOTE: Ryan Armbruster: Co-Founder & Chief Experience Officer, Harken Health
“Designing Health Care for Care”

Caring is an essential part of health care – it’s hard to argue with that.   However, over the past few decades, the U.S. health care industry has been unintentionally designed for anything but caring, and the most recent industry trend around consumerism threatens to propagate this misdirection. How has this happened? More importantly, how can we effectively address this situation and create great health care services for people? Ryan will share his perspective, from over a decade of designing health care services, on what we can do to get it right.
